Do I Really Need a Crown?

When it comes to dental health, one of the common questions we hear at our clinic is, "Do I really need a crown?" This is a valid concern, and the decision to get a dental crown should be made with a clear understanding of its necessity and benefits.

Understanding Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers a damaged or decayed tooth. It's designed to restore the tooth's shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these.

When is a Crown Necessary?

Understanding when a dental crown is necessary is crucial for maintaining long-term oral health. A crown isn't just a restorative procedure; it's a commitment to protecting and enhancing your dental wellness. Here are several scenarios where opting for a dental crown might be your best course of action:

To Protect a Weak Tooth: A tooth may become weakened due to various factors such as extensive decay, large fillings, or even the aftermath of root canal therapy. In such cases, a crown acts like a protective shell, reinforcing the tooth and safeguarding it against further damage. It distributes the stress of biting and chewing across the tooth, preventing breakage and preserving the tooth's functionality.

Restoring a Broken Tooth: Teeth can break or become severely worn down due to accidents, grinding, or even just the natural aging process. A broken tooth not only affects your smile but can also lead to discomfort and other dental problems. A crown can effectively restore the tooth's structure, strength, and appearance. By encasing the damaged tooth, it provides a stable and durable solution for day-to-day function.

Covering a Dental Implant: Dental implants are a fantastic way to replace missing teeth, but they require a final touch to make them complete - a crown. The crown is attached to the implant and serves as the visible part of your prosthetic tooth. It's designed to mimic the shape, color, and texture of your natural teeth, blending seamlessly into your smile while providing all the functionality of a real tooth.

Cosmetic Enhancement: Crowns aren't just for restoring health; they're also an excellent tool for cosmetic enhancement. If you have teeth that are discolored, misshapen, or just not aesthetically pleasing, crowns can provide a transformative solution. They can be tailored to match the color of your surrounding teeth and shaped to create a more harmonious and attractive smile. This aspect of crowns is particularly appealing to those looking to make a significant impact on their appearance with a relatively simple procedure.

Supporting a Dental Bridge: In cases where you have one or more missing teeth, a dental bridge may be recommended. Crowns play a critical role here, as they are used to anchor the bridge. The crowns are placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap, providing a stable support for the bridge, which holds the replacement tooth or teeth.

Large Fillings: Sometimes a tooth with a large filling, especially if there isn't a lot of tooth structure left, is at risk of fracturing. Crowns can be used in these situations to encase the tooth and the filling, providing additional support and reducing the risk of future breakage.

In summary, dental crowns are a versatile and essential component of dental health and aesthetics. Whether you're dealing with weakened teeth, seeking to restore functionality, or desiring a more beautiful smile, crowns offer a reliable and effective solution. At our clinic, we're committed to guiding you through this process, ensuring you receive the care and information you need to make the best decision for your dental health.

What Happens When You Get a Crown?

Getting a dental crown is a multi-step process, typically involving two visits to the dentist. Here's what you can expect:

First Visit: Examining and Preparing the Tooth: Your first visit involves a thorough examination of the tooth. X-rays may be taken to check the roots of the tooth and surrounding bone. If the tooth has extensive decay or risk of infection, a root canal treatment may be necessary before proceeding with a crown.

Preparing the Tooth: The dentist will then prepare the tooth for the crown. This involves reshaping the tooth's surface to make room for the crown. After reshaping, an impression of the tooth is taken to create a mold for the crown.

Second Visit: Placing the Crown: During your second visit, the dentist will place the custom-made crown. Adjustments are made to ensure a comfortable and accurate fit. Once everything is set, the crown is cemented in place.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

The lifespan of a dental crown depends on various factors, including the material used, the location of the crown in your mouth, and your oral hygiene practices. On average, dental crowns last between 5 to 15 years.

Extending the Life of Your Crown: To maximize the lifespan of your dental crown, follow these tips:

  • Practice Good Oral Hygiene: Regular brushing and flossing are essential.
  • Avoid Hard Foods: Chewing hard foods can damage crowns.
  • Regular Dental Checkups: Routine visits to the dentist can help catch any issues early.

Remember, while crowns are durable, they don't make the tooth invincible. Proper care is crucial to ensure they last as long as possible.

Conclusion

Genuine Care, Close to Home

I live near by there office and was happy to find MVDentalarts online. Great customer service. Did cleaning and two fillings. The main thing that made me happy that they didn’t try to sell me on the crown and doctor Steven said that filling will be enough, we will be checking and will try to save tooth as much as we can. Cleaning was very gentle. 5 min drive for me. Thank you. Definitely recommend.
